History of Paddock Wood

Paddock Wood, well known for its hops and oast houses, originally formed part of the ancient parish of Brenchley.

The Name Paddock Wood

There are many suggestions as to how Paddock Wood came by its name, including being named after the nearby Manor of Parrock, or the local woodlands and paddocks. A more interested suggestion is that around 1790 the owner of the nearby Hop Farm, fed up with workshy and unreliable labourers, stated that they would have their pay docked and hence Paydock Wood.

In 1842 Paddock Wood opened its railway station with services into London. The line also provides connections to the local towns of Tonbridge and Tunbridge Wells.

Cottages started appearing in 1847 and by 1851 Paddock Wood started to become a sizeable community and separated from Brenchley in 1860.
