     History of Tunbridge Wells

Tunbridge Wells began to draw peoples attention after Dudley, Lord North came to the area in 1606 whilst unwell and discovered a chalybeate spring. He drank from the spring and believed his health improved.

Tunbridge Wells as a Spa Retreat

He told all his friends and word spread, by 1630 Tunbridge Wells had become a spa retreat, by 1636 2 houses were built to accommodate the Ladies and Gentlemen. Other than that visitors had to camp nearby or lodge in Southborough.

In 1676 Shops and houses started to be erected on the Walks (now the known as the Pantiles) and in any other convenient area. Building boomed in the 1680's.

Although visitor numbers dwindled due to sea bathing becoming popular, Tunbridge Wells continued to grow and Richard (Beau) Nash became the Master of Ceremonies for entertainment in the area until his death in 1962 and Tunbridge Wells became a fashionable resort.

Railway

A railway station was opened in 1866 but in a different place to where it is now, although part of the old line is still in use as the Spa Valley Railway.

Tunbridge Wells Today

With its excellent links to both London and the coast, along with the great shopping facilities including The Royal Victoria Place shopping centre and other amenities, along with its history around the Pantiles, Tunbridge Wells has become a popular place for commuters to buy properties and tourists to visit.

Tunbridge Wells has a great choice of schools ranging from infants, through juniors and to both Grammar and Comprehensive Secondary Schools.

Transport

The mainline station provides links to London and the coast. There is a good bus service providing links to other local towns and villages, including Southborough, Rusthall, Tonbridge and Maidstone.

The A21 provides accessing the M25 motorway and in turn the rest of the motorway network, meaning Tunbridge Wells is a popular choice for commuters looking to buy properties, whether they wish to commute by road or rail.
